Ayr Photographic Society was founded in 1905, in the Town of Ayr,with the aim of promoting Photography in Ayr and Ayrshire. In 1905, A.P.S. joined the Scottish Photographic Federation, which was formed to assist all the Camera Clubs and Photo Societies in Scotland. Our Club held its first Annual Exhibition in 1908. We do not know how many members there were in those early days, but in 1911 the Catalogue for the Third Annual Exhibition lists 64 Photographers as having photos on display. The Provost's Shield, which is still the Trophy for the "Best Print in the Exhibition", was presented to the Society in 1913. A variety of Tearooms are mentioned as Meeting Places during the early years, but from 1959 to 1984 the Society had its own Clubrooms, at Carrick Place, and the maintenance and improvements to these take up quite a portion of the Minutes. The Society then moved to Prestwick Community Centre, but in 1993 moved back into Ayr to meet in Loudoun Hall, which is a very historic building dating from around 1300, but is well suited to our needs. A.P.S. was instrumental in forming the Ayrshire Photographic Federation in 1983, and still competes in it's Inter Club Competition. The Scottish International Salon, a very Prestigious Event, was hosted, very successfully, by A.P.S. in 1928, 1935, 1957 and 1984, and that can't be done without a lot of work from a large number of Members.
